Even though Google is a trillion-dollar company whose products billions of people use every day, it’s in a difficult position. For the first time in years, the company faces a significant challenge from a relative upstart in one of its core competencies, AI.

This phenomenon of AI chatbots acting autonomously and outside of human programming is not entirely unprecedented. In 2017, researchers at Meta’s Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research lab observed similar behavior when bots developed their own language to negotiate with each other. The models had to be adjusted to prevent the conversation from diverging too far from human language. Researchers intervened—not to make the model more effective, but to make it more understandable.

Although it’s important to be aware of challenges like these, there are still incredible benefits to LLMs, like jumpstarting human productivity, creativity and curiosity. And so, when using Bard, you’ll often get the choice of a few different drafts of its response so you can pick the best starting point for you. You can continue to collaborate with Bard from there, asking follow-up questions. And if you want to see an alternative, you can always have Bard try again. While LLMs are an exciting technology, they’re not without their faults.

Procrastination, difficulty in starting tasks, and an inability to stick to a schedule are common issues. AI tools can help by structuring your time more effectively and ensuring you stay on track. For example, if you have a major project at work, ChatGPT can help you identify all the necessary steps, from initial research to final revisions, and suggest deadlines for each step.

It’s certainly faster than either (though this may be simply because it currently has fewer users) and seems to have as potentially broad capabilities as these other systems. In a blog post written by two of the project’s leads, Sissie Hsiao and Eli Collins, they describe Bard in cautious terms as “an early experiment … Like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, Bard offers users a blank text box and an invitation to ask questions about any topic they like.

Unfortunately, OpenAI’s classifier tool could only correctly identify 26% of AI-written text with a “likely AI-written” designation. Furthermore, it provided false positives 9% of the time, incorrectly identifying human-written work as AI-produced. As of May 2024, the free version of ChatGPT can get responses from both the GPT-4o model and the web. It will only pull its answer from, and ultimately list, a handful of sources instead of showing nearly endless search results. For example, my favorite use of ChatGPT is for help creating basic lists for chores, such as packing and grocery shopping, and to-do lists that make my daily life more productive. That’s not going away, but the Gemini button will be added next to the search bar. This is all part of Google’s paradigm shift away from search and toward AI chat. One great feature Bard has is “drafts.” You can tap the “View Other Drafts” drop-down to see alternative responses to the prompt, and quickly switch between them. I really like this feature as it means you essentially get three responses right away for every prompt. Our work on Bard is guided by our AI Principles, and we continue to focus on quality and safety. We’re using human feedback and evaluation to improve our systems, and we’ve also built in guardrails, like capping the number of exchanges in a dialogue, to try to keep interactions helpful and on topic.

Bring up the Gemini overlay and the chatbot will happily summarize or answer any questions you may have about it. But Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a point Wednesday of touting the capabilities of the ChatGPT-4 chatbot — a product released nearly a year ago after being trained by OpenAI on large-language models, or LLMs. It might be difficult for users to notice the leaps forward Google says its chatbot has taken.
